Education

As a pipe band, Tidewater Pipes and Drums primary goal has always been education. We seek to grow and mold aspiring and skilled musicians in the Scottish Pipe Band tradition. As such we are proud to offer free lessons for students of any age on the Bagpipe, Snare, Tenor, or Bass Drum. We hold lessons during our Student Hour every Wednesday night at Saint Patrick Catholic School in Norfolk from 6 to 7pm, and full band rehearsals from 7-9pm. One-on-one instruction at alternative times may be arranged by request with instructors. Many of the bands members even go the extra mile (literally) to sharpen and hone their skills at various workshops and summer music camps, we are always looking to improve so we can bring the best quality of music to Hampton Roads

Pipers and Drummers will gather to during student hour to learn and improve their skills of: reading and interpreting music, maintaining their instrument, and playing it like a pro! Our members include elementary, middle, and high school, and college students. Many of our members are prior armed forces service members and first responders, we have teachers, librarians, and engineers. No matter your background, your age, or your musical experience, we welcome you to learn and honor the Scottish Pipe Band tradition. We also welcome visiting pipers and drummers from the armed forces, back from college break, or enjoying the summer off from school to join our circle even if only for a night.

FAQS:

Do I already have to know how to read music?

No. We are happy to introduce you to everything from rhythms to notes. We can help you grow into a musician and get you performing!

How long until I'm ready to play with the band?

This answer varies for everyone, especially as everyone enters with different musical backgrounds and aspirations. The effort and time you take to practice at home will reflect on your performance. There will be numerous opportunities throughout the year to participate in parades, concerts, competitions, and other events.

What do I need to bring with me?

We encourage all aspiring students to reach out to the band for specific instructions on what to bring to practices. Generally you will need to supply your own practice chanter or drum pad and sticks. We do not recommend new students purchase their own drums or bagpipes. To make sure you get the correct chanter, drum pad, or sticks you should email us at tidewaterpipesanddrums@gmail.com before making any purchases. There are different chanters, reeds for the chanters, styles/weights/sizes of drum sticks, etc.

Do I  have to be Scottish or Irish to join?

We welcome anyone who has the intent to honor the Scottish Pipe Band tradition through hard work and practice! We welcome anyone from any background!

Why should I join a Pipe Band?

We are a group of individuals dedicated to our musical craft, as such we are committed to constant improvement and excellence. But, we are also a family. There is a particular kind of comradery and kinship shared amongst members of the pipe band community. Before every event we love to encourage one another asking that we all "Play well, and have fun." Musicianship develops leadership, patience, confidence, discipline, and creativity.

Where and when is student hour or rehearsal?

Every Wednesday from 6-7pm at St Patrick Catholic School in Norfolk for lessons. Immediately after at 7-9pm is full band rehearsal. We STRONGLY encourage students to remain past the student hour and through full band rehearsal. Seeing how the band operates, becoming familiar with the repertoire, and following along in the music while watching/hearing the band play will help you accelerate your skills.
